Rewarding yourself for a job well done

It’s week 20 of Lighten Up Georgia  and you have been keeping your fitness program going, trying to stay as consistent as possible, maybe a few hick-ups along the way. Congratulations, over four months and reaching different milestones along the way you should pat yourself on the back. That ultimate goal is also getting closer.

There is a right way and a wrong way to go about rewarding yourself. The wrong way just sets you up for failure. What do I mean about "The Wrong Way"? The wrong way is when you run on your treadmill for 30 minutes and then go eat a great big piece of German chocolate cake. You say, "Well I burned off 200 calories so I can afford to eat it." The truth is that you didn't burn off as many calories as that piece of cake has plus you haven't gained anything at all. The whole purpose of running for 30 minutes was to burn fat and calories off your healthy diet which will aid in losing those pounds you’re carrying. Please don't try to rationalize bad choices by telling yourself that you deserve them. That's like telling yourself that you're a good driver so you're entitled to run a red light if you want to. Yes, this situation example could terribly alter your life but the same principle applies here.

hottub.jpgSo how do you reward yourself in a good and productive way? Of course being fit is its own reward, but to help things along, it’s important to recognize when you’ve reached your goals. Reward yourself by taking a warm bubble bath, going on a trip to the spa, getting a massage, purchasing some new gadget you have had your eye on. Maybe buying a new outfit, having dinner out with friends or even throwing a party. Just be realistic and use good judgment.

I hope the program has motivated you to start, enhance and keep your fitness plan going. The challenge is now to maintain it and reevaluate your goals. Believe in yourself, look to your friends or a qualified professional if needed to continue the plan you started, keep things progressing, striving for a lifetime of fitness and wellness. Don’t forget, you deserve a special treat when you reach different milestones, and when you reach that ultimate fitness goal you set back in week two. Keep fitness fun and enjoyable!
