Your Healthy Weight

By now you've been in the Lighten Up Georgia program for a while. It may be time for a booster on how to manage your healthy weight. In a previous tip we talked about the value of setting goals and rewarding yourself when goals are achieved. We reminded you about the value of making lower fat food selections and watching portion sizes, while eating a variety of foods. We hope you have made those steps a regular part of your daily and weekly habits.

Here are some other tips that help with healthy weight management.

  • Talk positively to yourself - Identify what aspects of yourself you like and appreciate. Focus on those points and forget about comparing yourself to others. It helps to post positive comments to yourself in places where you will regularly see them. On your computer at work, on your mirrors at home, or around the kitchen.

  • Check your healthy eating behaviors - Keep a note pad with you throughout a couple of days and check out when and where you are eating. Pay special attention to your snacking habits. Track whether you eat when you are truly hungry or if your meals and snacks are triggered by other factors in your life. Note your cooking style and determine if there are simple changes that could be made that would reduce the fat you use in cooking. Your moods or feelings about when and where you eat are other factors to consider.

More on portion sizes - For many people, portion sizes are out of line with their dietary needs. Now is another good time to double-check the sizes of food portions that you typically eat. Get out the measuring cups and see how close you come to standard portion sizes. If your portion sizes are unusually large, think about working them down to a more reasonable size. For example, did you realize that most people eat at least a double or triple serving of pasta when they eat out? One way to help you manage portion size is to slow down your eating so that you give yourself a chance to feel when you are full, and can stop before you overfill!

Water Water Everywhere...

Of all of the nutrients, water is the most crucial. The body gets water from the foods and fluids you consume in your diet. It looses water as it to perform metabolic activities like breathing and sweating, in addition to going to the bathroom. It is important for your body to stay hydrated in order to maintain health and be able to function.

The recommended intake for adults is at least 8 cups per day, and more on hot days or during exercise. Spread these 8 cups of water throughout the day. If you are already thirsty or your urine is a dark yellow, you are probably already dehydrated. Drinking a large glass of water before a meal may also help fill you up so that you don’t eat as many calories during the meal.
