The Benefits of Walking

Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for heart disease. One of the easiest ways to increase your level of physical activity is by walking. It requires no special equipment other than a good pair of walking shoes. It can be done outdoors in good weather and indoors in inclement weather. You can start walking 10 minutes at a time, working your way up to 30 minutes a day at least 3 to 5 times a week, and at a moderate-intensity, you can realize many short- and long-term benefits.

Walking may help you control your weight and your blood pressure, and improve the condition of your heart and lungs. It can help you look and feel better. Here are some benefits from brisk walking, 3 to 4 miles per hour:

  • Gives you more energy

  • Helps you relax and relieves tension

  • Improves the ability to fall asleep quickly and sleep well

  • Tones your muscles

  • Burns off calories to help lose extra pounds or helps you avoid putting on weight

Getting started is easy! Walk for 10 minutes three times a day, or 30 minutes at a time, whatever your schedule permits. Here are some tips to make it more fun:

  • Walk with a friend or coworker for 10 to 30 minutes on your lunch hour.

  • Walk up and down the hallways of the mall. Some malls open early for walkers.

  • Park your car in the remote area of the parking lot and walk to your destination.

  • Clip on a portable radio with headphones and walk in step to the music.

Go to a park and walk the footpaths and trails and enjoy the beauty around you.
