What are the Georgia Games?
The Georgia
Games Championships is a statewide Olympic-style sports festival and the
events are open to all citizens of Georgia. Every summer over 10,000
athletes compete in over 40 sports
at more than 50 venues during the month of July. To put it all in
perspective: the Georgia Games is larger than the Centennial Summer Olympics
that were held in Atlanta in 1996.
Logistics is
the program for supplying all Sports Venues and Support Services Staff with
awards, T-shirts, drink products, signage, sports supplies and equipment,
and Georgia Games property to support the annual competitions. This is the
largest State Games sports festival in the country.
How does the Logistics Program operate?
An Issue
Point/Warehouse complex is established each year to serve as the focal point
for supplying equipment and supplies to all venues. This is a professional,
well-run operation that is based on a long-standing system of established
controls. The program was created in 1991.
All
equipment and supplies that are not in position at a venue are delivered to
this central location where they are inspected, inventoried, sorted, and
distributed. After an event ends, the materials and property are returned to
the Issue Point where they are inspected, inventoried, and cleaned and then
reissued or packed away for annual storage.
Who Directs the Logistics Program?
Retired Air
Force Colonel Heinz Johnson created and designed the Logistics system in
1991 and he has operated the Issue Point/ Warehouse since its inception.
Colonel Johnson now lives in San Antonio, Texas and volunteers his time and
expertise to continue this unique operation.
What are the positions responsibilities?
The
Assistant to the Director of Logistics is a challenging and high value
position and one where a great deal of practical experience and worthwhile
expertise can be gained. The hours are long; the work takes place in a
non-air-conditioned warehouse; there are hurry-up conditions and pressure
situations at times; and there is a variety of “customers” and staff to
deal with.
Prior to
start-up (July 5) various documents and spreadsheets will need to be
prepared; supplies and equipment obtained; and initial facility preparation.
Included will be cost effective scheduling of vehicles and preparation of
delivery schedules and other duties as required.
